The Indian Ladies Association (ILA) has carved a unique place within Bahrain's cultural and philanthropic landscape through its distinctive approach to community service. Combining two qualities that define its members, tenacity and compassion, ILA has become a respected force in addressing community needs while contributing meaningfully to the wider development of Bahrain.

Founded in 1956 by a small group of women who initially came together to exchange homemaking skills and experiences, ILA has evolved into an organization whose outreach extends far beyond the home. Today, its initiatives embrace and support the broader community with warmth, inclusivity, and purpose.

The Association's strength lies in its diverse membership of over 200 women from various professional, cultural, and social backgrounds. Together, they contribute their talents, expertise, and dedication to drive ILA's charitable initiatives, community programs, and cultural activities. The organization's motto, "Service Before Self," is reflected in the unity, commitment, and volunteer spirit of its members.

One of ILA's most significant and enduring initiatives is the SNEHA Recreation Centre for Children with Special Needs, established in 1987.

The project was born from a deep sense of empathy for parents, particularly mothers, caring for children with special needs around the clock. Seeking to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children could learn, play, and thrive while giving caregivers much-needed respite, four dedicated ILA members founded SNEHA.

Today, SNEHA is a well-respected recreation and support center serving children of various nationalities and abilities. The center currently supports around 20 children through specially designed learning programs focused on:

• Functional literacy
• Numeracy skills
• Music appreciation
• Arts and crafts
• Social and life skills development

These programs help children build confidence, independence, and the skills needed to participate more fully in mainstream society.

SNEHA operates entirely free of charge for its students. The center is sustained through the dedication of ILA volunteers, supported by experienced coordinators and trained teachers employed by the organization. Financial support comes primarily from ILA's fundraising efforts and the generosity of Bahrain's residents, both local and expatriate.

What began as a compassionate idea has grown into ILA's flagship initiative, earning widespread recognition and appreciation for its meaningful impact on the community.

ILA regularly distributes food and essential supplies to labor camps across Bahrain, providing support to workers and families in need. Through these efforts, the organization seeks to ensure that vulnerable members of society experience the care and solidarity of the wider community.

The Association also previously conducted "Speak Easy," a spoken English program for low-income workers, helping participants improve communication skills and expand employment opportunities.

ILA's annual Dandiya Festival has become one of Bahrain's most iconic community events. For decades, it has attracted thousands of attendees and serves as a vibrant celebration of culture, inclusivity, unity, and togetherness. The event brings people of all ages and backgrounds together in a spirit of friendship and cultural appreciation.

Beyond its charitable initiatives, ILA has played a significant role in enriching Bahrain's cultural landscape by presenting renowned artists, performers, and thought leaders. Over the years, the Association has hosted acclaimed theatrical productions such as Tumhari Amrita and Dear Father, featuring celebrated artists including Farooq Sheikh and Shabana Azmi. It has also welcomed distinguished personalities such as Mallika Sarabhai, Kiran Bedi, Shantha Sinha, and Vandana Shiva, alongside popular musical performances by artists including Shaan and KK.

The Indian Ladies Association (ILA) conducts the Leela Jashanmal Lecture, an annual thought-provoking lecture focusing on philanthropy, community service and women’s empowerment, delivered by distinguished social leaders. Past speakers have included Dr. Kiran Bedi, Sudha Murty, Shobhaa De, Vandana Shiva and Dr. Tessy Thomas, among other eminent personalities.

For seven decades, ILA has remained steadfast in its mission of service, community engagement, and social impact. The launch of the CSR Excellence Awards 2026 represents another milestone in this journey, creating a platform that recognizes and celebrates organizations and individuals who share the Association's commitment to building a more sustainable, inclusive, and socially responsible future.
